Chili, Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton

The ‘Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton’ presents its eleventh exhibition: Contemporary Chilean art.
The artists’ multidisciplinary works depict a political and cultural image of this country, which suffered a violent coup at the hands of Augusto Pinochet in 1973.
Chile had to wait until 1990 to return to a democratic state and start its economic and social reconstruction, something that is poignantly expressed in some of the pieces in the exhibition.
A mixture of fiction and reality that occasionally leans towards the absurd.

I was personally very moved by the short film by Camilo Yañez, in which the long horizontal shot of the Estadio Nacional reminded me of the controversial film “Missing (1982),” where it is used as a concentration camp.

I also appreciated the satirical work of Alvaro Oyarzùn, whose meticulous drawings take organic forms to the limits of morbidity.

Chili, l’envers du décor takes place from 19 February to 9 May 2010 in the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, 60, rue de Bassano.
