Religious buildings are often perceived to be untouchable. However this hasn’t stopped an inspired Dutch architect from setting up office inside an empty church.

Abandonned since 1991 due to a lack of worshippers, Ultrecht church has since become a hive of activity for the Zecc architecture firm.

Before taking over the building, the company had to agree to one condition : it wouldn’t make any changes to the façade of the church and would maintain all of the building’s cultural and religious elements .

St Jakobus has been converted into a breathtaking, modern office – cum – home with a mezzanine bathed in natural light from its stain- glass windows. The house’s minimalist design preserves the original structure of the church as much as possible, in case it ever becomes a place of worship once more.

A perfect example of how a historical building, can, with the right approach, be transformed into an extraordinary living space. It’s a stunning renovation that I personally find particularly inspiring.
