House of Porters Antwerp
House of Porters is the guest house run by the unconventional maître décorateur Pieter Porters. Situated on 44 de la Kipdorpvest à Anvers, in a listed building which has previously housed both the Treasury and the Austrian Consult, this 3000m squared showroom could be simultaneously used as a selling space and a guesthouse.
Pieter Porters, a celebrity favourite, Porters’ designs are chic yet timeless and his renovation of the House of Porters is testament to this characteristic style. With an array of weird and wonderful antiques from all over the world and a “Tropical Rain” fragrance wafting throughout, the House is simply spectacular ; a real curiosity cabinet . xxl. It goes without saying that Porters’ interiors are sumptuous. Often inspired by the Baroque era, his designs combine cosiness with decadence.
Variety is the key to Porters’ work. Three luxurious suites inspired by New York, English and French style respectively, each possess their own unique ambiance. Having been lucky enough to spend time at the House, I’d say that initially, you are overwhelmed by its opulence. However the logs, crackling away in the hearth also give it a cosiness and sense of tranquility which can’t help but make you feel at home.

In addition to its balcony, each suite boasts its own endearing quirks : a practical writing bureau for example, or lavish bathrooms with ornate bath tubs sunk into the floor.
If you have the eye for that sort of thing, you’ll notice that each piece of furniture still has its label in tact. This is because the House of Porters prides itself on letting guests buy any item that takes their fancy. If you’ve been blown away by the comfort of your bed for example, you can buy it on the spot and the original will be immediately replaced !
This system also has its practicalities. Pieter admits that certain celebrity guests have been known to trash their luxury rooms. However the constant remplacement of furniture means that their indiscretions can be quickly forgotten !
In addition to the hotel and the boutique, the guest house is also comprised of a gallery, a tea room, a culinary art gallery, a florist’s workshop and even an architect’s office !
Luxury of a bygone age is the order of the day at Pieter Porters, which, when combined with its « je ne sais quoi , » means that despite it’s opulence, it doesn’t take you long to feel right at home !
