Immersive Cocoon
Cocoon is a fascinating new digital project that exploits the concept of a 3D intuitive interface.
John Underkoffer, a former fellow at the prestigious M.I.T. Media Lab, came up with the Cocoon concept as a result of our fixation with touch screen tablets and other objects that have revolutionised our capability to interact with new medias.
“When we talk about interactive interfaces, today we think of 2D objects that sit in our pockets, and are controlled with 2 fingers. So we thought up an environment where our entire bodies and minds were involved in a complete 3D experience.”
Immersive Cocoon consists of a 360-degree interior dome screen and motion tracking cameras, which allows interface interaction à la “Minority Report”.
As well as entertainment, the Cocoon can also be used for educational means, either as simulations or for training purposes.
Developed by the NAU team in Zurich, Switzerland, the project has raised concerns about its social and psychological impact. As the name indicated, the Cocoon is all encompassing, like a second world. Yet another one.
