Golden Hook x Materialiste

Golden Hook

Golden Hook… There are some concepts, like this one, that make you wish that you were the person who came up with the idea! What’s that? You haven’t heard about the much-feted beanies and scarves from Golden Hook even though everyone is talking about them? Very well… what follows is a quick catch-up session for those unforgivable non-connoisseurs.

Created in 2009, Golden Hook is a small French company that specialises in the knitting of tricolour beanies and scarves. And who is in a better position to claim mastery of this craft than grandmothers with their experienced hands? That is why Golden Hook only employs retired grannies to process the orders.

The principle is simple: you create your beanie (we will leave the scarves for another day) online on their website, by choosing from a selection of fabrics (wool, angora, cashmere and alpaca), shapes and sizes. As for the possibility of customising your garment, the service isn’t half bad: you can personalise each ‘row’ with a different colour if the mood takes you (see the illustration below) and, the cherry on the cake, add a bobble!

Having finished the creative phase, you then have the luxury of selecting which granny will take charge of the work! Once you have placed your order, expect to wait about a fortnight before receiving your beanie in a cute box.

The principal materials (mentioned above) are sourced directly from breeders in the south of France, and are subject to very strict quality control.

We were utterly captivated by the concept as well as the result, which you can admire here. In the Materialiste colours, blue white and red with a golden seam, the finish is extremely good and it is very comfortable to wear: soft and warm. I wouldn’t be without it at this cold time of the year…

Finally, marvel at this poetic and inspiring video that makes up the Golden Hook 2010 lookbook.
