Just as a photograph captures the essence of the past or of another land, so too can a pair of shoes be considered a cultural artefact in its own right. Such is the belief of J.M. Weston and Kitsuné, who have joined forces for Spring/Summer 2011 to create a capsule collection of three classic models : the mocassin, the derby and the laced ankle boot.

Interestingly enough, the creative idea behind the « East Hampton » collection began with a series of images from the 1950’s. The photos, taken in the Hamptons, reveal American high society indulging in the simple pleasures of life. It is surely no coincidence that Kitsuné should look to America for inspiration, asJ.M. Weston’s founder, Eugène Blanchard, learned the famous Goodyear stitching technique while travelling in the USA in 1904.

The collection therefore emerges as a fitting tribute to the intricate handcrafting typical of the Limogean shoemaker.

The East Hampton theme lends itself equally to the neo-classical, slightly preppy style created by Parisian duo Kitsuné. Revisiting old classics, the collection brings a fresh touch to the timeless chic of J.M. Weston.

If Gildas Loaec offers a pleasing take on the laced ankle boot (add detail), Masaya Kuroki’s interpretation of the Mocassin 180 is rather too reminiscent of a previous model designed during the brands’ first foray in 2009, curated by Jalouse.

This elegant collection of emminently wearable shoes are the result of a thoughtful collaboration.
